RAILWAY CONNECTIONS

  1. In 1972 work began in the Apprentice School to build a model of the famous record-breaking steam locomotive “Mallard” but it was never completed. When Peterborough Councillor, Charles Swift OBE, himself an engine driver who had fired Mallard in his youth, was made a Freeman of the City of Peterborough, Apprentice Instructor Tom Ayliff and two YTS trainees completed the model for presentation to Councillor Swift on 14th May 1984 by Peterborough City Council. The locomotive’s tender was modified to accommodate the official scroll.

  2. Work on the restoration of Nene Valley Railway’s locomotive No.73050 commenced initially in the “Arktos” siding at Baker Perkins’ factory, Westwood Works, Peterborough and from 1971 at Peterborough Sugar factory at Woodston. It was donated to the Peterborough City Council by the Reverend Richard Paten, and steamed under its new ownership in 1972, having been named “City of Peterborough” by the Mayor of Peterborough on 28th August 1972.

  3. This 1944 Wickham Petrol Engine Gangers’ Trolley was restored by apprentices at Baker Perkins Ltd and is now exhibited at the Nene Valley Railway Station at Wansford, near Peterborough. The refurbishment was supervised by Apprentice Instructor Ray Lydiard.
