CONNECTIONS
- In 1972 work
began in the Apprentice School to
build a model of the famous record-breaking steam locomotive “Mallard” but
it was never completed. When Peterborough Councillor, Charles Swift
OBE, himself an engine driver who had fired Mallard in his youth, was made
a Freeman of the City of Peterborough, Apprentice Instructor
Tom Ayliff and two YTS trainees completed the model for presentation to
Councillor Swift on 14th May 1984 by Peterborough City Council. The
locomotive’s tender
was modified to accommodate the official scroll.
- Work on the
restoration of Nene Valley Railway’s locomotive No.73050 commenced
initially in the “Arktos” siding at Baker Perkins’ factory,
Westwood Works, Peterborough and from 1971
at Peterborough Sugar factory at Woodston. It was donated to the
Peterborough City Council by the Reverend Richard Paten, and steamed under
its new ownership in 1972, having been named “City of Peterborough” by
the Mayor of Peterborough on 28th August 1972.
- This 1944
Wickham Petrol Engine Gangers’ Trolley was restored by apprentices
at Baker Perkins Ltd and is now exhibited at the Nene
Valley Railway Station
at Wansford, near Peterborough. The refurbishment was supervised
by Apprentice Instructor Ray
