Baker Perkins Historical Society - Virtual Books

BAKER PERKINS WORKING IN THE WIDER COMMUNITY

FOREWORD

This is the second in a series of" virtual books" aimed at providing an easier penetration into the depths of what have become rather dauntingly large websites. The concept of virtual books came into being in 2011 and is explained in the introduction (use a link here) to the Virtual Books section of www.bphs.com and in the preface (use a link here) to the first virtual book, 'published' at that time - "A Miscellany of Baker Perkins Bits and Pieces", a collection of photographs by John Burnham of a wide range of artefacts with Baker Perkins connections.

Since then, John has taken photographs of more artefacts made by Baker Perkins, some of which have been processed by Margaret Preston to form the images contained in this second virtual book. The photographs have been chosen to show something of the ingenuity and skill of members of the company's workforce who, after enjoying the benefits of a world-renowned Baker Perkins Apprenticeship, could cope with the most detailed and complicated task. The artefacts span a diverse range but always with the underlying theme of being made by Baker Perkins – often in the Apprentice School – for organisations or individuals in the local community.

The inherent flexibility of the 'virtual book' concept allows the inclusion of additional images and textual modifications to be made easily, therefore, if anyone has more information to add to the existing captions, or new photographs to be included, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Dick Preston can be contacted via the Westwood Works website.

Similarly should anyone out there have any suggestions as to how our coverage of the products and activities of the 'old' Baker Perkins might be improved, please get in touch.
